U.S. spy agents worked on Swedish soil illegally

Monday, 23 May 2011
Agents from the U.S. without permission from the Swedish authorities had spotted terrorists in Sweden. Swedish Security Police (SAPO) are reported to have caught the agents who then left the country, according to the Swedish newspaper, Svenska Dagbladet.

The incident with the U.S. agents on Swedish soil has so far been kept top secret. It all came to light two years ago, during the first half of 2009.
It was during a reconnaissance mission by the Swedish Security Police (SAPO) that they discovered that they were not alone in keeping track of a group of suspected terrorists.

When SAPO verified the background of the other people who had also watched the suspected terrorists, was it turned out that they were American agents who were working but without the knowledge of the Swedish government.

Thus, the Americans had violated several rules in their relations between Sweden and the United States, writes Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet.

After the discovery was made SAPO protest to the U.S. intelligence chief at the U.S. Embassy in Stockholm, and the two American agents left Sweden very quickly.
Swedish Justice Minister Beatrice Ask wish at this stage not to comment on the matter, while at the same time the Swedish Security Service told the newspaper that they neither confirm or deny the information.
