Unemployed Danish people must collect garbage

Monday, 11 April 2011
As the weather improves and people enjoy the sun, they have started forgetting to clean up as they leave thus leaving their garbage around. Danish councils are required to clean up the mess but are are worried about the extra bills that they will incurred in picking them up.

But also there are lots of unemployed people around doing nothing but collecting benefits. A great idea! – Let all the unemployed people get out and clean up!

This is a new idea being developed by several mayors, based on a plan conceived by the Danish Society for Nature Conservation's annual waste collection. It showed last week once again that places such as beaches, park and streets were littered with plastic, paper and pizza trays around the countryside.
“We have zero growth and can not put more money into the areas of cleaning. So it's an obvious place where the unemployed can be used for something meaningful, "says Mayor of the municipality of Kolding, Denmark, Jørn Pedersen.

Such a project in the Kolding municipality earlier was stopped because as the unemployed starting doing the jobs of those who were paid to do, there developed intense friction as there was fears that the unemployed people will gradually eat into the jobs of the employed. But local authorities feel that this is not the case and that the project should go ahead.

Critic of the plan accused the local authorities, call the scheme "a really bad idea."  The point out that it is unfortunate that the Danish society has come to where there is not where to keep job seekers but to place then in the lowest ranking occupation such as waste collection.  Denmark has lost its power as place where dreams are made and where people aspire to meaningful life by building proper careers and get help to aspire.
