Monday, 30 May 2011
Tolerance of homosexuals is increasing seemingly around the world and Denmark is at the top. This is contained in a study by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, in the USA.

Tolerance towards homosexuals is highest in countries like the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland, Belgium and Denmark, writes news bureau NTB.

Of the 31 countries that have been scrutinized in the global study, tolerance is increased in increasing in 27. Only in Cyprus, Czech Republic, Latvia and Russia where the result show increased weariness towards sexual minorities, the survey shows.

Indeed, the proportion of Russians who believe that homosexuality is decidedly wrong has risen from 59 to 64 percent since 1991.

It was backed by a small group of protesters with rainbow flags and banners who recently tried to demonstrate in the Russian capital, Moscow, in favour of gay rights. They were attacked by nationalists and ultra-orthodox Christians and several gay activists ended up being arrested by police.

“We ask the European Council to deny Russia the right to vote since the country does not respect the rights of gays and lesbians,” said the U.S. activist Daniel Choi, who was also arrested.
The study also shows that gay tolerance remains low in South American countries, South Africa and Turkey.
