The level of extreme negative feeling to immigration increasing in Norway

Thursday, 18 August 2011
Today, the level of negative attitude towards immigration in Norway has more than doubled and one in ten Norwegian is extremely critical of immigration unlike over a decade ago.

A recent research examined the voters’ attitude in connection with the last three parliamentarian election in the recently published book title “the political landscape”.

“When it comes to the attitudes towards immigration, there has been a change to the negative direction. This has been significant in the years from 2005, but the change in the negative direction was greatest from 2001 to 2009,” says Bernt Aardal, research director at the Institute for Social Research in Norway, to Norwegian Radio television broadcaster, NRK.

The book analysed data from the last election, in 2009, and concludes that one in ten voters are extremely critical of immigration. This means that these people have responded most negatively to questions about immigrants and is reflected to the national character.

Research Leader Bernt Arndal told NRK that he did not believe the summer's terrorist attacks in Oslo will affect the proportion of negative attitudes towards immigration.

“What we have seen in our research material is that attitudes towards immigration policy are very stable over time. In fact, among the most stable settings, we can find,” says Bernt Aardal.

He does not believe that the increased proportion of extremely critical immigration voters will mean increased electoral successes for the Progress Party, which is an anti immigration party. Those who are extremely critical towards immigration, those voters basically already put her foot on voting the party that will totally make Norway only for Norwegians.
