Prayers are not allowed at school closing ceremonies even in church as religion finally leaves SwedenMonday, 30 May 2011
As graduation period arrives in Sweden, one issue that had been a tradition for years – prayers in school chapels or were church officials officiate religious ceremonies to graduating students is to be barred. Prayers and religious sensitive activities are to be barred from Swedish schools especially if the Muslim are affected by it.
In the last years the Swedish Schools Inspectorate decided to call the aspect off schools because a priest was criticised for praying in one school in Bors. Since then the rule has been made clear that no more prayers are allowed again in schools confirming the view that Sweden has finally become a pagan country or gradually becoming a Muslim country.
“It is what it is. It's the times we live. It feels sad that the church can not get there any more, "said Pastor Olle Wallin, who held a prayer during graduation in Gnghester School in Boras last year to radio Sweden .
Ingegerd Hilborn who is the general counsel at the School Inspectorate said that the rules are clear.
“Graduation can be held in the church if there is no other location to meet in. It can also be that there is a tradition at the school that has long had graduation in the church, "she said to radio Sweden .
She also confirmed that it is okay to hold school ceremony in the church, but then it should not have any religious element.
“There shall be no prayer or blessing, or other religious elements,” she added.
Last year Nya Lundenskolan, a school in Gothenburg held its graduation in rgryte nya kyrka (rgryte New Church). There was a complaint made to the Schools Inspectorate but the schools Inspectorate thought that in this case, the school right. The reason – because the students there, including the Muslims, were positive.
