Over 200,000 Finnish people face debt recovery

A total of 213,000 private Finnish individuals faced debt recovery proceedings at the end of last year.
Common debts include unpaid taxes, fines and hospital bills. According to Statistics Finland, rents and day care fees are also among payments in arrears.

Almost 400,000 items of unpaid vehicle taxes were recorded last year. In addition, around 20,000 businesses and other organisations faced debt recovery proceedings.

The number of debt recovery proceedings rose by 3,000 last year with a total of almost 3.8 billion euros owed. An average debt stands at 15,600 euros. Around 65 percent of the people facing debt recovery were men.
