One third of Swedish household wants to scrap the TV license

Tuesday, 22 March 2011
There is nothing as bad as having a failed credit rating just because one could not pay TV licence. This is something the Swedes find unforgiveable as a simple solution for that is to ban the payment of TV licence.

More than one in three Swedish household wants to abolish the TV license fee and instead would want that the cost of public service broadcasting should be financed through the tax system, according to a survey carried out by the polling organisation SIFO on behave of the Swedish daily Gteborgs-Posten.

53 percent think that the TV license should be retained. 36 want it to be paid through the tax system and 11 percent are undecided in a poll which 1000 people were contacted and their opinion on the subject sought.

The Swedish Parliamentary Culture Committee is to review the financing of the public institutions such as Swedish radio, Swedish television and the Educational Broadcasting (UR) services.
