Most cases of suspected money laundering in Malmo

Friday, 05 August 2011
Malm leads the cities in Sweden in terms of number of reports of suspected money laundering at state owned casinos. This is despite the fact that the casino has the second least number of visitors compared to similar gaming houses in Stockholm, Gothenburg and Sundsvall.
So far this year, a total of 153 cases of suspected money laundry cases have been registered at casinos in Stockholm, Gothenburg, Sundsvall and Malmo. The vast majority of the reported cases have taken place in Malm. And considering the number of visitors to a casino, it turns out that casino in Malm tend to have comparatively second fewest visitors.

In Malm 63 cases of suspected money laundering have been reported. In Stockholm, the the figure is 47 in Gothenburg, 37 and from Sundsvall six cases have been reported during the first six months of this year. The figures come from the Swedish Gaming Board.

“A possible explanation could be that the casino (Malm) is closer to the continent and has more visitors with access to foreign exchange,” says Joachim Elm, business development manager at Casino Cosmopol.

Over the past three years the number of reports of suspected money laundering has increased steadily in Malmo. From 35 cases in 2009 to 63 cases this year.

In Stockholm, the number of reported cases fell from 69 last year to 47 this year. In Gothenburg 39 cases in 2010 and 37 this year and in Sundsvall eight last year, this year's six suspected cases has been reported.
