HIV infection should be investigated in gay clubs

Saturday, 11 June 2011
To get an idea of the spread of syphilis and HIV among men who have sex with men (guy men) Swedish Institute for Disease Control, Smittskyddsinstitutet will use the help of the Swedish Federation for Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Rights known as RFSL and to visit gay clubs in Stockholm to carry out such investigation.

The idea is to ask guests anonymously and then seek their saliva sample. The sample is analyzed and the subject is asked to contact a healthcare centre after a while, to see if the test was positive or not.

This is a very challenging approach and the agency has no idea on how it should proceed will the investigation but the heath services will have a discussion with the Welfare Board about it.

Last year, the prevalence of syphilis among men who have sex with men was up 50 percent in Sweden, however, the number of HIV-infection was down.

The study is funded by the EU and will be implemented in several other European cities.

Among problems thought constrain this finding is that the study may not be compatible with the Infectious Diseases Act, a law that makes great demands on the right to anonymity in testing and possible contact tracing.
