Grimsvotn in Icelandic Volcanic eruption could be worse than last year already Spewing about 2,000 tons of ash  per seconds

Monday, 23 May 2011
Yesterday, as the Icelandic Grimsvotn volcano started erupting, it was though that the volcanic eruption would quickly die down. But now it seems as if those thoughts we wrong. But now it seems as if those thoughts we wrong as it is now thought that the worse still seem still in the way.

According to Reynir Bödvarsson, seismologist at Uppsala University in Sweden, the eruption seem to be on the way to be worse that that last year. Speaking to Swedish television, he pointed that the slowdown observed last night seems to be turning around and the erupting is accelerating somewhat. At the moment there is the production somewhere between 1000 and 2000 tons of ash per seconds.

However, the composition is smaller compared to the power of the initial explosion, then a 20 km high ash was spewed into the sky.

“Then it was of 10 to 20,000 tons of ash per second, spewed out - an enormous force we're talking about, "said Reynir Bödvarsson.

Europe's airlines and passengers are now breathlessly waiting to see how the outbreak unfolds. If the eruption continues unabated, the wind will play the determining role the ash direction will take.

The next few days are no problem for Europe as it looks. But in the longer term it is likely that Europe will be affected, in the worst parts.
"It may even be worse than last year," said Reynir Bödvarsson.

Air traffic was paralysed last year in most of Europe for a week when the ash cloud from Eyjafjallajökull made it impossible for any flight to operate. The reason is that the ash particles will solidify in the cooler parts of aircraft engines which in the worst cases will destroy the air craft engines.

“The volcano could continue to produce ash for long. But it also requires the availability of water, which is melting ice. Where the volcano is now, there is not so thick ice, so one can hope that the volcano soon moves into a nicer phase of lava production, "said Reynir Bödvarsson.

Other observaera beelive that since the testure of the maeterial sent out is courser, it may quickly fall mack to the surface givern that it is heavier. Therefore the type of disruption usually associated with this type of action mught be minimised.
