Gonorrhoea increasing among Swedish young people influenced by a mix of summer tools

Saturday, 30 July 2011
Summer, sun and unprotected sex are that mix which has lead to the toxic explosion of sexually transmitted diseases in Sweden now. New data show that the number of Chlamydia and syphilis cases held steady, while gonorrhoea is on the increase at a large margin.

According to recent half-yearly data from Stockholm Disease Control, over 4,000 people are reported to have been infected with Chlamydia so far this year. Last year it was about 8950 such that the probability is that roughly the same figure could be attained this year. According to Bjorn Eriksson Deputy of Stockholm County Medical service, when people will carry out tests after the summer in September, it is expected that the number will go up.

It is also held that although cases of syphilis have remained constant from last year, gonorrhoea pears to be on the rise. 245 cases so far this year have been identified, compared with 254 cases during all of 2009 and 430 cases last year.

“Gonorrhoea has gone up a bit in recent years. It has probably spread a bit more in the heterosexual and youth group,” says Bjorn Eriksson.

Stockholm County Council, together with the Health Care Guide and Hospital services since March 2010 been running a project aimed at home tests of Chlamydia. To order a free test kit people are advised to make contacts online, perform a simple test at home and send it for testing. A few days later results are sent via the Internet.

Around 250 people a week do the home tests via the Health Care Guide and a total of more than 16,000 people have tested since the project started. Of the tests carried out about in 6 percent Chlamydia has been found.
