Finland’s Grand Committee to decide the country’s stance on EU Bailouts

Friday, 13 May 2011
Finland’s Parliament’s Grand Committee meets on Friday to deal with Finland’s position on the aid package for Portugal. The basis for the discussions will be the Social Democrats’ deal with the National Coalition party on conditions for supporting the bailout.

The committee is to decide NCP chair Jyrki Katainen’s mandate for next week’s Ecofin meeting of EU finance ministers, and what kind of agreement Katainen can offer Finland’s support for. The Portugal bailout, along with the temporary and permanent bailout funds, will be discussed at the meeting.

NCP chair Jyrki Katainen and SDP chair Jutta Urpilainen on Wednesday presented a position which would mean that Finland supports the Portugal aid package along with the temporary and permanent bailout mechanisms, so long as certain conditions were met.
The True Finns announced on Thursday that the conditions were not enough for them to support the proposal. They will now remain in opposition rather than join a government that supports the bailouts.
