Finland seeking to sell water purification technology abroad

Tuesday, 20 September 2011
Pure water has the potential to become a real growth industry for Finland. The industry has made several Finnish companies now looking overseas.

“We have very good skills in Finland, both from the paper industry, water purification and the municipal sector. The only thing that Finland might be a little weaker on is that we always have sufficient water,” says director Kaj Jansson at Kemira.

Now it's no longer about selling bottled water to the Middle East. Instead, companies have designed a system or a model of artificial noses that can identify pollutants and systems that continuously monitors the water and dispenses the precise amount of chemicals needed to make water clean again.

According to research specialist, Mona Arnold, at the Technical Research Centre, VTT, it is a clear businesses niche.
“Water is in some countries a strong political factor. For example, Singapore has no proper water supplies and buys most of its water from Malaysia. This is of course a very uncomfortable political condition,” she said.

Also, the Finnish government has been waking up to the need for improved water technology.  Tekes, the Finnish Funding Agency for Technology and Innovation, has a water program where about 60 companies are participating.
