Drop in the number of asylum seekers in Finland

Tuesday, 14 June 2011
A total of 913 people applied for asylum in Finland during the first half of this year. The number of applicants is around 40 percent less than a year ago.

If the same trend continues, it is thought the total number of asylum seekers will reach 3,000 by the end of the year. Last year, there were a total of 4,018 asylum applications.
The majority of asylum seekers came from Iraq, Somalia, Russia and Afghanistan.
Unaccompanied under-aged applicants totalled 50, which is half the number of last year.

A significant difference compared to last year is attributable, in part, the number of applicants from other EU member states. The drop in such applicants could be due to a pilot fast track approach adopted by both the police and the Finnish Immigration Service relating to EU asylum seekers.

About one-third applicants are allowed to stay in Finland.
The Director of the Asylum Unit at the Finnish Immigration Service, Esko Repo, says the number of applicants is always linked to world conflicts and disasters.
