Danish economy seem unaffected by Japanese earthquakes

Tuesday, 15 March 2011
Danish company, Crown ships every week 100 containers of pork to Japan. And despite that the country is currently suffering its worst disaster since the Second World War, there seems the company's exports abattoir were not affected.

“Surprisingly enough, we see our clients demanding the same level as usual. And it is probably connected with the fact that no matter what the circumstances, people still have to have something to eat,” says communications officer Lisbeth Carøe of Danish Crown to Danish Radio.

Every year Danish Crown sells pork for three billion Krona a year to Japan. The fact that Denmark's largest exporter to the quake-hit country is commercially unaffected, it fits very well with the perception usually held about the effects of natural disaster on the Danish economy.

Danske Bank has analyzed the consequences of Japan's situation for the Danish economy. Although the disaster has almost incalculable consequences in many parts of Japan, it was initially felt that the Danish economy will suffer most. But it was recently concluded that the Danish economy does not seem to be particularly vulnerable to any downturn in economic activity in Japan according to analysts at the Dansk Bank.

Japan as an export market during the past decades become less important to the Danish industries - only two percent of Danish exports go to the world's third largest economy. Most exported products are from Denmark are pork and medicine. So it is normal that basically fall in demand will likely not be noticeably even though the Japanese economy slows down.
