The Danish cartoonist Kurt Westergaard, best known for his Muhammad Caricature 2005, was forced to flee from Oslo earlier than planned after the Norwegian police got wind of the murder plans against him.
In that vein, a man in his thirties has been arrested in Norway on suspicion of planning an attack against cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.
The Norwegian daily, Dagbladet, reports of the issue and that Westergaard visited Oslo on Monday to participate in book presentations, but stopped the visit suddenly and went home to Jutland, in Denmark. The official explanation then was that he had heart troubles.
But police sources confirm now that the background of his immediate return home has to do with was a terrorist plot against him, according to Dagbladet. Sources also hold that the Norwegian security police received information that a known criminal had found automatic weapons and explosives that could be used in an attack against the Danish cartoonist.
AdvertisementWestergaard would, according to the source be murdered when he’ll be on the Literature House in Oslo. Westergaard took the decision himself that he was leaving Norway and was hastily returning to Denmark, while police set up roadblocks around Litteraturehuset (literature house) near Oslo Castle.
The man in his 30s who is suspected of being behind the terrorist plans was stopped on Tuesday morning in his car by security forces. The excuse was that he violated the rules of the road. He was later released.
The man's attorney would not comment on terrorist suspicions. The suspect is said to be linked to organized crime groups with close links to Islamist extremists, according to Dagbladet.
Norwegian police seem to have had no concrete evidence against the man because he was let to go.
76-year-old Westergaard, the man behind the caricature of the Prophet Muhammad with a bomb in his turban, published in Jyllands-Posten 2005 has been on the hit list of the Islamists since then and there is bounty on his head for who ever kills him.
In recent years he has had to have personal body guards for protection because of the several threats, As such the Danish security service, PET watch around the clock.
