Copenhagen brought down by heavy rains

Sunday, 03 July 2011
Copenhagen's motorways and railway lines were bathed in water on Sunday after an intense torrential down pour which has paralyzed the traffic in large parts of the Danish capital.

Within two hours much rain fell on the capital such that it looked like the rain has been falling for three months. Several underground subway stations looked like swimming pools after the Danish sky literally opened up on Saturday evening and a waterfall-like rain poured on the capital.

The roads reminded commuters and residents of the wide rivers which forced the Copenhagen Metro to close.

“It was an extremely wet weather which had major implications as it occurred in a large city with a lot of asphalt. This prevents the water course, running away,” said Joern Thomsen, a meteorologist at the Danish Met office.

Several approaches to Copenhagen were also closed by flooding along the roadway. Cars got stuck as the water reached meter in several places.
The subway started rolling again on Sunday but the problems of regional and Öresund trains remained widespread.

Traffic between Copenhagen Central Station and Schiphol airport stood quietly for several morning hours while water was pumped out.
“Passengers will unfortunately expect major delays and cancellations throughout the weekend,” says Jannik Preisler, press officer of the rail transport company DSB.

Amidst all the chaos meteorologists predicted a new downpour which threatened to worsen the situation in the already water-logged city.
