Child poverty growing in Sweden  despite the strong economic growth and impressive low public debt

Tuesday, 07 June 2011
The issue of child poverty in Sweden has been raised again. It is now accounted once more that there is a growing problem of child poverty in Sweden today that is the proportion of poor families has increased from 8-9 percent a decade ago, to 15 percent today.

Approximately 220 000 children, are living in poverty in Sweden - more than one in ten, living in poverty in Sweden. This is not a goo indication for a powerful economy growing at a rate of 6 percent annually with very low public debt.
One of the reasons being attributed for this has to do with family policy which has become increasingly less able to smooth out differences between rich and poor families with children.

The charity organisation, Save the Children argues in a report published on Tuesday, which radio Sweden reported which much has to be done in Sweden to eliminate child poverty.

The charity points that current family policy since 2003 has failed to smooth out the gaps in the society that lead to such states and point for example of deterioration in that it is more difficult for poorer families to get housing and that more people also find it had to get housing benefit which is tied to parental benefits.

Without a reviewed proper family economic policy the proportion of poor families with children will increase to 25 percent. According to the EU definition, these are those who earn less than 60 percent of median income. They are considered poor.

Professor Tapio Salonen who is behind the Save the Children's new report, examines how children are affected by the Swedish family economic policy for the pastten years.
