Fall in racist crimes in Finland or just a police doctored numbers

Wednesday, 03 August 2011
Just last month we reported the growing racist activities in Finland especially since the coming of the Far right True Finns to parliament in Finland. But it also has turned out that there has been a general fall in racist crimes in the country.

Finnish Police is reported to have logged fewer racist crimes at the start of this year than in recent years, according to the Finish newspaper, Helsingin Sanomat, which draws from data of the first six months of the year.

In that line, the police estimate that 271 racist crimes would been logged in this year, which would be fewer than in any year since 2005.
Helsingin Sanomat reports that the number of racist crimes had steadily increased in recent years, but now these figures appear to be falling.

Police logged 141 racist crimes between January and June, which is 17 percent fewer than in the same period last year.
The paper interviewed a researcher Jenni Niemi at the Police College of Finland, who posited that the decline could be partly attributed to police having less time to investigate racist crimes than before.

Another explanation is, according to her that the police do not record all racist crimes as racist. But the Chief of Police Chief, Inspector Robin Lardot defends thepolice. According to him, it's not about the police failing to record the racist motives behind the crime. He believes instead that it is a coincidence that the figure happened to fall right now. According Lardot racism has nevertheless increased in the community.
