Swedish migration authorities forecast more migrants to the country

Friday, 04 May 2012
Swedish authorities are expecting a flood of immigrants to the country this year. According to reports, instead of the expected 31 000, 34 000 asylum seekers are expected to Sweden this year.

Also the Swedish Immigration Service has raise its forecast for the number of family immigrants from Somalia it would wants to allow and would want more money from the government.

Oskar Ekblad, head of the asylum application at the Swedish immigration board feels that this forecast is based on the view that there has been increased turmoil which has continued in Afghanistan and Somalia.

Migration of relatives is also expected to increase sharply. The main reason is considered to be a judgment in the Migration Court of Appeal in January that makes it easier for relatives to stay in the country. As it affects mostly Somalis, some 20 000 applications are expected to come from the Somalis this year, up from 18 500 in the previous forecast.

“Sweden is clearly a country of destination,” says Ekblad. In addition, it is expected because labour migration is expected to go up sharply this year.
