Social Democrat leader, Stefan Löfven connect well with women over 55Sunday, 22 April 2012
More good things happening to the Social Democrat party since the arrival of Stefan Löfven as leader. Within three months in office, he is winning the hearts of and confidence of all voting groups. But most of all, he is attracting women over 55 and people in smaller towns.
“Those who are now returning are the voters who have been disappointed in the past years. The leadership shift comes with expectation and hope,” said political scientist, Jenny Madestam on Swedish television (Svt).
“One main reason is that Löfven is signalling peace and stability,” she said. He seems especially to appeal to middle - class women over 55.
According to a poll conducted by polling organisation, Demoskop, commissioned by the tabloid newspaper Expressen, the voters over 55 years old, women, working people, middle income and living in small towns are those who have heeded to the initial calls from the party and are returning. These are Social Democrats' traditional voter groups that strayed away in the past.
On the other hand, the influx is not as great in the group made up of younger, educated and urban people.
“I see them as an important group. We have to think that even the younger successful city dwellers should regard us as an option,” says Stefan Löfven to the newspaper.
Jenny Madestam thinks that there is a risk that there is a lot of hot air blown in the figures.
“Now it's about time to come up with policy proposals. The shadow budget will be a first indication of whether voters hope will be incorporated or not.”
