Swedes are buying more and more online as the web sales tipped to expand more

Thursday, 22 December 2011
While the traditional Christmas shopping is perceived to be slow in Sweden as few filled store baskets like never before, the trend is shifting in line. This year, e-commerce is on the increase as sales are reported to be increasing by ten percent and set a new sales record via on line.

“Both people and businesses like online. It also fits well in a recession because online stores are great to drive down prices,” says Jonas Arnberg, an analyst at Research Institute of Trade, Hui.

A clear sign that Christmas shopping is increasingly transferred to the internet grid is that the Post office had a very busy week. During the night between Tuesday and Wednesday, all previous records in terms of number of packets that pass through the packet terminals were shattered.

Some 352,000 packages were handled during Tuesday night, which were 21,000 more than similar time last year.

Books, clothes and electronics are the sectors that sell best on line. Bookstore Adlibris Books, is one of the largest e-retailers in Sweden, has reported record sales of 66,000 books in a single day.

Hui's forecast for 2011 is that e-commerce will transform to become a Skr27.5 billion industry, up 10 percent compared with last year, and this year's Christmas shopping on the web is believed to amount to Skr5.4 billion.
