Norwegian unemployment falls

Norway's unemployment rate fell unexpectedly to 2.7 percent in August, down from 2.8 percent in July, official figures from the Norwegian statistics office show. The number of unemployed Norwegians thus amounts to 71 344.

Average forecast among analysts was for an unchanged unemployment rate in Norway in August, according to various consensuses.

According to seasonally adjusted figures, the number of unemployed in Norway in August moves slightly, from 68,898 to 69,168 people.

On the whole, Norwegian reports hold that the supposedly fall in the unemployment is not great because more unemployed people participating in the labour market activities.

However, authorities hold that unemployment actually rose. “Lower demand for labour has contributed to a slight increase in unemployment in August,” said Minister Hanne Bjurstr�m in a comment to Norwegian employment services (NAV's) new monthly figures for August.

Unemployment in construction is still down, while the situation is weaker in sectors which employ women in particular. It has contributed to unemployment to increase among women and decreased among men, according to the Minister, Bjurstr�m.
