Hundreds of journalism jobs are disappearing in Sweden as Media houses save big time

Many of Sweden's largest media house are planning to build big savings packages as such most of them have planned to chop several hundred jobs.
Tabloid paper, Expressen will save Skr50 and Skr60 million, according to the decision by the paper’s Management on Thursday. Among other things, Skr10 million will be saved on printing and distribution and Skr20 million on staff costs, which translates to roughly around 20-30 journalists and other skills.
AdvertisementThis happens despite the fact that there was a profit of Skr80 million in the first eight months of this year in their operations.
At the same time, centralized editing will move from subsidiaries Kvällsposten (Evening Post) and Göteborg Tidning (GT) to Stockholm in which the consequences will be the lost of 22 services.
“Malmo and Gothenburg will often pay while employers in Stockholm feel safe”, says Eva Sternäng, spokesperson for Kvällsposten, said.
But Expressen is not the only media house carrying out savings. Around between 300 and 400 jobs will be lost among the major media houses in Sweden the year, according to a survey by the news paper Resumé report Swedish daily Dagens Nyheter.
For Sydsvenskan, based in Malmo in southern Sweden, an estimated 65 and 85 posts will disappear. Television station, TV 4 will cut up to 100 jobs, writes Resumé. On top of that, a savings of Skr50 million in the next few years, in their news business, the television channel recently informed.
The other very big tabloid paper, Aftonbladet, has already warned staff that cuts are in the pipeline. Information on how many is expected to be chopped this fall remains obscured.
