Icelandic parliament recognizes Palestine

The Icelandic parliament, the Althing, is the first Western European country to recognized Palestine as a state.


A proposal presented by the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ă–ssur Skarphedinsson was passed by 38 votes in favour of the Althing, which has 63 members. 13 members abstained and twelve were absent, none passed a negative vote. It is now up to government to formally recognize Palestine.

A historic day, said a very pleased Amal Tamimi, an Icelandic parliamentary member who has a Palestinian background.
