Finnish Parliament’s Grand Committee has approved proposals on the Portugal rescue package as well as the temporary and permanent bailout funds with 15 voting for, 5 against and 5 abstaining.
Earlier this week, the National Coalition Party chairman Jyrki Katainen announced that his party and the Social Democrats had agreed on the issue of aid to Portugal, which played a major role in both Finland's election and government formation talks.
The committee gave NCP chair Jyrki Katainen the mandate to approve the bailout at next week’s Ecofin meeting of EU finance ministers.
NCP chair Jyrki Katainen and SDP chair Jutta Urpilainen on Wednesday presented a position which would mean that Finland supports the Portugal aid package along with the temporary and permanent bailout mechanisms, so long as certain conditions were met.
The True Finns announced on Thursday that the conditions were not enough for them to support the proposal. They will now remain in opposition rather than join a government that supports the bailouts.
