Building improved relations with the  neighbours - Denmark stops tightening customs controls with neighbours

Sunday, 18 September 2011
The outgoing Danish government had in the past 10 years teased Sweden in several ways by deporting Swedish citizens who applied for social benefits which they where entitled to and by implementing stricter border controls between Denmark and Sweden.

However, that stricter Danish border controls on Sweden and Germany looks to be a short-lived phenomenon.
Sweden criticised Denmark about the border issues but took it easy. Now the news government, led by the victorious Social Democrats in the last election will likely eliminated that borders controls according to reports on radio Denmark.

The Social Democrats and the Socialist People's Party now says that the project should be stopped, reports Danish Radio.

Danish People's Party leader Pia Kjaersgaard told Danish radio that she is critical of the decision to quash the border controls which was the brain child of the far right Danish people’s party.

“But there's nothing I can do something about it now”, she said.
