Danish border under EU scrutiny – delegates heading to Denmark to examine its legality

Wednesday, 13 July 2011
The EU Commission is now sending an expert mission to Denmark to look at the enhanced customs controls at the Danish borders.
EU experts will arrive in Denmark on Thursday and will be there until Friday, according to EU Commissioner for Internal Affairs Cecilia Malmstrm, in a statement.

“The final decision on whether the Danish rules are in line with EU law on free movement of goods, services and people will also depend on how they are implemented in practice,” says Malmstrm.

“That is why the commission after agreement with the Danish authorities is sending experts to Denmark tomorrow to examine how action has been implemented,” she continued.

The EU Commissioner stresses that the commission in recent weeks has had "constructive dialogue" with the Danish authorities about the strengthening of the Danish border issues.
