Vladimir Antonov arrested in LondonFriday, 25 November 2011
Vladimir Antonov, the Russian financier who wanted to buy Saab automobile and who has been wanted by the Lithuanian authorities has been reportedly arrested.
Lithuanian prosecutors have been seeking to question him as part of an investigation into claims involving Snoras Bank, which has been trading not in accordance with the law as such Vladimir Antonov, has been arrested in an inquiry into asset stripping.
They are also seeking his business partner Raimondas Baranauskas. Both are former managers and shareholders of the bank and deny any wrongdoing.
AdvertisementReports hold that the Russian businessman was arrested in London on Thursday evening with his business partner. Police in London told the BBC that they arrested a 36-year-old man after a European arrest warrant expires on Wednesday.
City of London Police said: "In response to a Europe-wide arrest warrant officers arrested a 36-year-old man in London this afternoon."
Antonov, whose company Convers Sports Initiatives also owns a large part of Portsmouth Football Club in England, has been arrested in connection with a banking scandal in Lithuania. Antonov, suspected fraud, document fraud and money laundering in the Latvian Krajbanka a subsidiary of Antonov Lithuanian bank Lace in which Antonov owns 68 percent.
Snoras Bank went into temporary administration last week and on Tuesday Latvian authorities suspended the operations of another of Antonov's banks, Krajbanka.
On Thursday evening, Antonov business partner Raimondas Baranauskas was also arrested in London according to reports. The 53-year-old Baranauskas is also suspected of accounting fraud and malfeasance.
