New challenge for Swedish Gripen as competitor step up game

Thursday, 26 April 2012
As the quest to strike a sale increases and every player juggle for position to strike a deal in a very competitive market, Saab which had hoped would secure a deal to sell its Gripen jet fighter to the Brazilian now starts seeing that dream becoming more difficult to meet.

This is because the US – based aviation giant Boeing, which has been some what coiled about the zeal to gain the Brizilian business has now stepped up its game.

The company which challenges Swedish Gripen for the big order of new fighter jets to Brazil has promised to throw in lots of pecks if the Latin American country buys the jet fighters from Boeing. Boeing promised to allow them access to advanced American technology if it buys Boeing’s F/A-18 Super Hornet.

This announcement was made by the U.S. Secretary of Defense Leon Panetta during a visit to Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday.

Defence group Saab's offer for the Gripen NG-planes already includes a right for the Brazilians to participate fully in the development of the new planes. But the question now is whether the Brazilians will see the American offer as more enticing than the Swedish ones.

Brazil's decision to purchase new fighter aircraft has been delayed. The deal is worth billions of dollars, and even others such as the French Dassault Rafaele jet fighters are also in the mix in the bid for the contract.
